Description
Lovely and colorful sinamay fabric and abaca fibers are woven to create this graceful nativity scene made in The Philippines. Nativity figures measure approximately 8 inches tall.
Sinamay fabric is made from leaves of the abaca plant. Abaca fiber is woven by villagers in the southern island Mindanao of the Philippines. Fibers are stripped from the inside of wild banana trees and woven into various textiles. The weaving process requires very little water and electricity. The fiber is chiefly used in the manufacture of high-quality marine and industrial cordage. Ropes usually used by ships are made of abaca. It is the strongest of all commercial plant fibers; 3 times as strong as cotton, twice as strong as sisal, and a little stronger than true hemp.
By purchasing this nativity scene, you are supporting artisans from impoverished areas of Philippines. This item was acquired through the Fair Trade movement, which pays fair prices to the artisans, and puts people first, not profits.
