Description
Stylized carnations were used in art during the Ottoman empire to reflect wealth and abundance. Different colored carnations beautifully decorate this nativity scene from Turkey. Turkish carnations are typically shown as large fan-like single flowers.
Our Turkish nativity scene features three fritware figures and a Turkish rug. These nativity figures are handcrafted in Turkey using methods and techniques from the 14th to 16th century Iznik pottery tradition of the Ottoman Empire.
Please note: This item is hand made in Turkey. Slight variations may occur from that which is pictured. The Turkish made mini rug may vary as well.
Fritware is a pottery technique incorporating frit (ground glass), 85-90% ground quartz and a small amount of clay. When fired at high temperatures, the frit melts to bind the quartz together. The figures are then handpainted in traditional Turkish designs. The rug is machine woven in Turkey.
