Women in rural areas of Azerbaijan knit these expressive little nativity figures using soft colorful yarn. Azerbaijan has a deeply rooted knitting tradition with one of the most famous Azerbaijani knit items being the colorfully patterned house socks called jorab. Highly skilled knitters of traditional jorab socks also knit these lovely little nativity figures.
