Talented Ecuadorian people turn orange peels, ordinarily a waste product, into artistic creations. What started out as a hobby has expanded a business, and has engaged many other members of the community. These women help supply orange peels and produce the Christmas nativities. They're earning a fair wage to help their families, and the money is often spent on the education of their children. Click on photos for a larger view. This Nativity scene was acquired through a Fair Trade organization. Fair Trade pays impoverished artisans a fair price for their work. Fair Trade puts people first, not profits.

Wonderful Tiny Nativity for my World Collection
This is absolutely adorable. I am amazed at the detail given the very small size of nativity scene. As I have collected nativities from other countries I try first to always buy fair trade and second to buy one that either responsibly uses a locally resource or re-purposes or recycles used objects. This nativity fits the bill on both counts. It arrived very quickly and was packaged so securely.
