Description
Handmade in Uruguay, the Rinconada Nativity Scene is truly one of the finest examples of contemporary ceramic design. This scene includes the holy family and stable. Joseph stands 4.5" high.
Each piece of this nativity scene began with a master design. From this master design ceramic is molded and then hand carved to add texture, detail and personality. When the carving is finished the piece is ready for its first kiln firing. The figures are then hand painted with a colorful variety of ceramic slips and bright enamel glazes. When the hand painting is completed each figurine once again needs to be fired in the kiln. Because colors fire at different temperatures, many firings are required. Some designs may be fired up to six times to achieve the desired result. The application of 18 karat gold and platinum mark the final step in the design process. These precious metals are used not only to accent the personality of the figurines, but to transform the collection into the brightly colored jewels in the world of hand crafted ceramic design. The Rinconada Nativity figures are hand made in Uruguay.
The development of the Rinconada style was strongly influenced by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Joan Miro; three Spanish artists whose work dominated Spanish art in the first half of the 20th century.
