Description
The Maasai people are an ethnic group in Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania and stand in as representations of the holy family in our Maasai nativity scene.
Red checked patterns are typical in Maasai clothing and the traditional word for the colorful fabric clothing is Shúkà. Additionally, head shaving is a commonly done within the Maasai to symbolize passage to a new stage of life. It is noteworthy that all three of the holy family have shorn heads symbolizing a new beginning!
Handcarved from lustrous kisii stone. Joseph stands 7 inches tall.

This set is now a favorite. The detail of the '"gathers" in Joseph's cloak, and Mary's beads remind me these figures represent individuals -- who sacrificed to care out of love and faith, despite their humble status.
